Covenant

A covenant is an agreement upon the promises concerning the relationship between two or more parties.  In Biblical terms the covenant is the prime agency of God’s self-revelation in history.  God reveals Himself to be the covenant God.  The essence of the covenant between God and man is “I will be your God, and you will be My people.”  The probationary covenant of life by which man was to keep God’s commandments perfectly was ultimately and consummately fulfilled by Christ, God in the flesh.  The covenant of grace is that by which faithful believers are attributed Christ’s satisfaction by faith.  An understanding of the covenant is central to understanding the history of redemption.
