Eschatology (Last Things or End Things)

The word “ESCHATOLOGY” is traditionally defined as the study of “last things.”  It has broad applications that are used by many different people.  In the Full Preterist view the last days refer to the end of the old heavens and earth cosmological order, consummating with the end of the Jewish age in AD 70.  Therefore, the “ESCHATON” or “last days” period of correct “ESCHATOLOGY”[Greek – “eschatos” – Strong’s #2078 = farthest, final time, last, uttermost] would fall in the first century between Christ’s first and second comings.

Etymologically, the term eschatology (“the study of the last things”) is drawn from certain Scriptural passages that speak of “the last days” (2 Tim. 3:1; Heb. 1:2), “the last time” (1 Pet. 1:20; Jude 18), “the last hour” (1 John 2:18), and other comparable statements.

The ESCHATON would include Christ’s public ministry (AD 26-30); His atonement work for sin; including the Cross, the Resurrection, and His ascension; the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:8); the transition period from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant systems; the second coming Parousia of Christ in AD 66-70; the removal of the obsolete Old Heavens and Earth cosmological order/administration based on animal blood sacrifice and the full consummation of the New Heavens and earth cosmological order/administration based on the eternal blood of Christ (Heb. 8:13, 9:13-14, 18-26, 10:4-9, 12); the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple; and the resurrection and judgments of the just and unjust ending in AD 70 (Acts 24:15; 2 Pet 2:9; 3:7; Jude 1:6; Rev. 20:10-15; Rev. 21:27).

8But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8).

“16But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17‘And it shall come to pass in THE LAST DAYS, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams.  18And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy.  19I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND AWESOME DAY OF THE LORD.  21And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”(Acts 2:16-21).

Therefore, ESCHATOLOGY is NOT the study of FUTURE things; but rather LAST things.  It includes the Parousia; the Resurrection; the Judgment; the cosmological order/administration; the end of the old heavens and earth cosmological order; and the end of the Jewish age and passing away of the Old Covenant Jewish system.  It is also the time of the full establishment of His eternal New Covenant spiritual Kingdom both in the seen realm in the church, and the unseen heavenly realm where God dwells (the re-uniting of His one eternal Kingdom (Eph. 1:10)).

Of course, as believers in Full Preterism, we are persuaded that these things have all been fulfilled by our Lord Jesus Christ in the first century by AD 70.  There is nothing else for Him to accomplish for our redemption.  It is completely finished and fulfilled.  We faithful believers are now in Christ and have received all that He has accomplished for us.  Our salvation is fully consummated and our eternal dwelling place with a new individual, immortal, perfect, spiritual body in His presence in the heavenly realm is secured for once we leave this world upon our physical death.
