The Bible studies and articles refer to the term “Law” many times. It is very important to understand that they are using the term in its technical sense as used in the Bible. Whenever the Bible uses the term the law without any kind of a qualifier, it is invariably a reference to the Old Covenant of Moses and Israel (all 613 laws as a whole unbreakable single unit). The Hebrew term for the Law was the Torah.
The Old Covenant Jewish religious system has passed away in the plans of God after AD 70. This includes the Old Covenant LAW OF MOSES, along with the sacrifices, ceremonies, feasts, and days that were required of the physical Jews under the Old Covenant. The LAW was completely fulfilled in Christ and, after the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the temple by fire in AD 70, the LAW passed away.
The nation of Israel is no longer the chosen people of God. His people after AD 70 are those who are born-again Christians (believing Jews and believing Gentiles). These are called “True Jews” and are heirs to all the promises. They are spiritual Jews inwardly by faith in Christ; not outwardly by circumcision, or by national ancestry, or by keeping the LAW.
“28For he is NOT A JEW who is one OUTWARDLY, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29but he IS A JEW who is one INWARDLY; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the SPIRIT, not in the letter (law); whose praise is not from men but from God.”(Rom. 2:28-29).
“14For as many as are led by the SPIRIT of God, these are SONS OF GOD. 15For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the SPIRIT OF ADOPTION by whom we cry out, “ABBA, FATHER.” 16The SPIRIT Himself bears witness with our spirit that WE ARE CHILDREN OF GOD, 17and if children, then HEIRS–HEIRS OF GOD and JOINT HEIRS WITH CHRIST, if indeed we suffer (in His death by faith) with Him, that we may also be glorified (with Him) together.” (Rom. 8:14-17).
“6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For THEY ARE NOT ALL ISRAEL WHO ARE OF ISRAEL, 7nor are they all children because they are the (physical) seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” 8That is, those who are the children OF THE FLESH, these are NOT the children of God; but THE CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE ARE COUNTED AS THE SEED.” (Rom. 9:6-8).
“28There is NEITHER JEW NOR GREEK, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for YOU ARE ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS. 29And if you are Christ’s, then YOU ARE ABRAHAM’S SEED, and HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE.” (Gal 3:28-29).
“13For by one SPIRIT we were all baptized into one body — WHETHER JEWS OR GREEKS, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one SPIRIT.” (1 Cor. 12:13).
The Old Covenant Jewish religious system, including the nation of Israel, the city of Jerusalem, and the physical temple were epitomized under the “Old Heavens and the Old Earth” cosmological order based on animal blood sacrifice. They have been destroyed by fire in AD 70 and have passed away in God’s plans.
“18For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth PASS AWAY, one jot or one tittle will by no means PASS FROM THE LAW till all is fulfilled.” (Matt. 5:18).
Jesus told His disciples that two things must occur before the LAW could pass away. First, every jot and tittle of the LAW must be fulfilled (Christ fulfilled all of the law in Himself; Matt. 5:17). Second, “Heaven and earth” must pass away. Christ consummated the removal of the Old Heavens and Earth cosmological order with the finality culminating with the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the temple in the Jewish-Roman war ending in AD 70. Therefore the LAW has been fulfilled and passed away in AD 70.
Those who believe that the physical universe and the physical planet earth must pass away are unknowingly advocating the continuance of the keeping of the entire LAW today (every jot and tittle of it). That would include the Sabbath, tithing, and hundreds of other requirements of the LAW. It would also include the sacrifices and ceremonies that were required by the LAW.
But Christ has fulfilled the LAW, every jot and tittle of it. Everything that the Jewish laws pointed to was fulfilled in Christ. He has destroyed the old heavens and the old earth – the old cosmological order of the way the unseen heavenly realm where God dwells had to operate with the seen earthly realm where man dwells had to function through an earthly high priest and the animal sacrificial system. This old obsolete cosmological system, existing as an empty shell form since the time of the cross (Heb. 8:13), epitomized in the Old Covenant Jewish temple, was fully removed with the total destruction of Israel and the temple in AD 70.
